In my most recent post, A Critical Renaissance, I stated that in the wake of the new Renaissance (the one we’re living in now), individuals must cultivate and maintain each of the self-chosen most important areas of their lives. A unique balance must be achieved.
But how we do actually do this?
Achieving balance in life – especially in today’s hyper-demanding world – can be an extremely challenging undertaking. There are days when we “fall off the horse” – when we just don’t get to everything. Still other days when we feel on top of the world and are able to squeeze in, somehow, gym, healthy meals, a trip to the bank, a call to our mother, and somehow manage to do something we’re passionate about (believe me, those days are what I live for).
But how do we address the inherent inconsistency of human nature?
I believe that every problem – every frustration – in a human life, provided that we’re already equipped with basic necessities, can be traced back to some lack of balance. Not getting to one of the puzzle pieces that go into one of our Most Important Areas that we’ve already, hopefully, discerned. Letting the scales tilt too far to the left or the right.
Negligence or over-emphasis – opposites but equally potentially problematic – can both lead to a conflict in a relationship, financial distress, health issues, or even the feeling of being generally unfulfilled in life.
This is why Balance is my main value. (And it’s not just because I’m a Libra.)
We all need it – now more than ever. But Balance is not achieved overnight. It’s a daily process, one that extends throughout the rest of our time on this earth.
OK, Pierson, so, if I don’t achieve Balance, one of the most difficult things EVER, I could have a whole litany of problems. Great!
Well, before you throw up your hands in overwhelm, know that there is a solution. And it’s actually a rather simple one. All it is is this: to commit to the process of achieving Balance one day at a time.
That’s it. Once you’ve committed, once you’ve said to yourself, “I am going to do this, one day at a time,” you are already embarking on the journey of a lifetime. And it’s the journey that will allow you to thrive in this day and age of the new, Modern Renaissance of the 21st-century.
What are some things you will do this week to engage in the process of finding Balance in your life, one day at time? Post in the comments below.
And have a great week.
